A question for the Christians: Is the union/marriage of a christian to a non-believer opposed by the bible?
in Genesis 6:2-3, the descendants of Seth (sons of God) took the daughters of men (descendants of Cain), and God became angry with them.
and from I Kings 11:2, I quote ” from the nations of whom the Lord had said to the children of Israel,’you shall not intermarry with them, nor they with you. For surely they will turn away your hearts after their gods’..”
and in II Corinthians 6:14, it was stated “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?”
So does that mean that the bible is against the marriage of a theist to an atheist?
You have to keep in mind who wrote the Bible and at what time it was written. It was written by men so many things they say about women’s obedience might be too strict and even today’s men might think they were too controlling back then.
Also the intermarrying is looked at a bit harsh in the Bible and don’t get me wrong others do that too…I mean the Quran is very harsh against the so-called non-believers as well…don’t mix with them etc. etc. plus if two people marry and one of them is Muslim and the other one isn’t, the child has to be Muslim.
I personally do not agree with the harsh take on intermarrying people of other faiths (and yes I am a Christian) but I don’t think God will punish you for falling in love with a non-Christian, non-Muslim etc etc I don’t think He’ll punish you for marrying that person. I mean I’m sure whoever you’ll marry won’t be a bad person (I mean oftentimes you’d rather have a good-hearted atheist than a hating “believer”).
So my answer is sure the Bible/Quran/etc might be against it but you have to keep in mind that the Bible has been written by people way back when they were against polytheists and when they were not that open-minded to other religions. The Bible might be against it but I’m sure God isn’t. My take on it…if there’s love between two people then there’s also God between them and you don’t need religion to approve it. Religion is man-made, faith is given by God.
